Re-Choir'd Listening Debut

Last night, some interesting stuff went down at Austin Coffee & Film.

The night began like any other night. Miscellaneous people were hanging out at Austin hoping to see some interesting music.

Finally, around 9:30p Casey Powers (right) and Joey Bradshaw (left) of local, classic country revival group, The Silver Fleece took to the stage.

During their set, they played an awesome rendition of folk standard, "Man of Constant Sorrow."



They finished their all-too-brief set with a cover of, contender for greatest song ever, "Ooh La La" by The Faces.



Casey and Joey were followed indie-pop (also my) band Little Insects.

It was our first show as a trio again. Casey Schwarz (middle of the photo) switching from guitar to glockenspiel, Omar Delarosa (aka me and on the right) on vocals and switching from piano to guitar, and Brian Phillips (left of the photo) back on drums in a few months. It was exciting.

We played a new song from the upcoming Almost Ghost album called "Preface By The Author."



Then we played a technology-less version of "Burn The City."



Finally, we closed our Little Insects set with "Stop Taking Advice From Songs," which, as you can see in the background of the video, seemed to get us in trouble with the cops--or not.

After we pushed all our Little Insects equipment and stuff to the back of the stage, the main attraction and indie, a cappella choir, Re-Choir'd Listening robed up and took the stage. Then briefly left the stage for a group huddle.

After the group huddle, the choir-ing (and debuting) began.

Taking the stage from left to right, the choir members were: Frank Candamil, Omar Delarosa (me), Jeremy Ratchman, Libby Rosenthal, Christopher Johnson, Jessica Earley, Cathleen Bota Trygved, Nicholas Trygved, and, conducting, Brian Phillips.

After singing Happy Birthday to Sidney Poitier, the choir broke out into an a cappella cover version of The Rentals' "Friends of P."



Later in the set, they performed a medley of Kanye West songs that combined loops from "Jesus Walks," "Can't Tell Me Nothing," and "Gold Digger."

The night ended with what can only be described as a spontaneous, a cappella mash-up of both the Beatles and the Joe Cocker versions of "With A Little Help From My Friends" in which Re-Choir'd Listening was joined by about half the audience up on the stage.
